Osteoarthritis

Introduction
 Osteoarthritis is a common form of arthritis.
 Arthritis is an inflammation in the joints.
 Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disorder that is characterized
by degeneration of articular cartilage.
 Generally osteoarthritis affects the weight bearing joints, large
joints and Central joints.
 Commonly older women have more effect with osteoarthritis. Eg. -
Above 50 years (particularly in postmenopausal age).
 Osteoarthritis is a non-inflammatory disorder due to cartilage
degeneration.

Types
Primary osteoarthritis
 Primary osteoarthritis is also idiopathic osteoarthritis.
 Commonly occur in the elders peoples and there is no previous
pathology.
 Cause of primary osteoarthritis is unknown.
 Most common form of osteoarthritis.

Secondary osteoarthritis
 Secondary osteoarthritis occurs due to previous joint injury or
inflammatory disease.
Eg. - Previous infection and deformity, obesity, rheumatoid
arthritis, hyperthyroidism etc.
