Osteoarthritis
Introduction
Osteoarthritis is a common form of arthritis.
Arthritis is an inflammation in the joints.
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disorder that is characterized
by degeneration of articular cartilage.
Generally osteoarthritis affects the weight bearing joints, large
joints and Central joints.
Commonly older women have more effect with osteoarthritis. Eg. -
Above 50 years (particularly in postmenopausal age).
Osteoarthritis is a non-inflammatory disorder due to cartilage
degeneration.
Types
Primary osteoarthritis
Primary osteoarthritis is also idiopathic osteoarthritis.
Commonly occur in the elders peoples and there is no previous
pathology.
Cause of primary osteoarthritis is unknown.
Most common form of osteoarthritis.
Secondary osteoarthritis
Secondary osteoarthritis occurs due to previous joint injury or
inflammatory disease.
Eg. - Previous infection and deformity, obesity, rheumatoid
arthritis, hyperthyroidism etc.
